Mass Evacuation Exercise

16.05.2017

The Malta Red Cross National Response Team took part in a Mass Evacuation Exercise, a European project in which, apart from Malta Red Cross, crew members of the Costa Concordia cruise liner, the Ministry for Transport, Transport Malta, the Armed Forces of Malta, the Police Force, the Civil Protection Department and the Health Department were involved.

The simulation involved the evacuation of 200 injured passengers from a cruise liner after a fire broke out on board.  Malta Red Cross provided over 50 volunteers together with 7 ambulances, 12 tents, logistical expertise, an RFL unit and Water Life Saving vessels throughout the exercise.

This training exercise, which falls within the Society’s National Disaster Preparedness Strategy, was overseen by EU and State officials together with the cruise liner’s captain.
